How To Define Your Target Audience

August 14, 2020

When you have your niche defined, your next step as a business should be to know WHO you are posting for. The “who” is known as your ‘target audience’, or ‘ideal client’.

A target audience is a specific group of people you want to reach and serve.

WHY IS KNOWING YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE IMPORTANT?

Without truly understanding and defining your target audience at the very beginning it will be very hard for you to develop effective growth and communication strategies.

When you know who your target audience, or ideal client, is, you are able to create and implement strategies to:

  • Build your customer base quickly and efficiently
  • Connect with and relate to them in a more authentic and personal way.

Let’s create your Target Audience together! Grab a piece of paper and answer these questions:

  • What is the age range of the group of people I want to reach?:

  • Are they ‘male’, ‘female’ or both?:

  • What country (countries) does this group of people live in?:

  • What are some interests these group of people have?:

  • What is their average income?:

  • What are some of their biggest pain points?:

  • What are some ways I can help them?:

By answering these questions, you have created a great starting point for your target audience.

Now, when you are creating marketing strategies or brainstorming content ideas, ALWAYS keep this information in mind. Write your captions, blogs, and content as if you are talking directly to them. Help them address their pain points. Talk to them like you know them…because you do!

  1. Isabelle says:

I’m an abstract artist, and defining my audience is tricky, since their demographics are very different. They mostly relate to the feelings my paintings evoke for them.
There’s no « pain point » or « problem » to help them with. Even if I switch to « desire », it’s so subjective that I could miss the target.
    What can you suggest?
